Remove the wire that goes to the mag to test for spark. When the switch is in the off position it connects the mag to ground. When in the on position the mag is not connected to ground thru the switch. Test with a volt ohm meter.

Do not connect any electrical power source to your magneto. It creates it own electricity when the shaft inside the magneto is turning as the engine turns. You can download a copy of GSS 1012 service manual for magneto and battery ignition systems from the Quick Links tab at the top left corner of this page.

That wire from the frame to the same screw would be the problem. It is grounding the magneto, which is what the switch does to kill it. Either that wire should be to the side of the switch, maybe under the mounting nut, or it had a battery ignition switch at one time and that wire on a second terminal of the switch provided the ground to kill the magneto spark.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John beat me to it. Try disconnecting that ground wire and starting the tractor. Keep in mind once you start it you'll need a way to ground the mag to shut it off again. Or turn off the gas and let the carb run dry.

If it is set up correctly for a magneto, then there is a one wire kill switch. That switch grounds the magneto when you want to kill the engine. It does that through the internal mechanism, so it needs no extra ground wire. The extra ground wire would have it grounded all the time. If working properly, the switch is out to run, in to stop. If all else fails, remove the connection to the switch AT the magneto, and try again. As mentioned earlier, you can touch that post back to the wire momentarily to kill the engine.

I pulled the magneto because I couldn't get the back screws out to remove the cap Once I got the cap off I found contacts are really corroded. I haven't had a chance to put it back to together yet but im almost Shure that's my issue, What can I use on the points and contacts to keep this from happening Thanks Again for all the help

Hi,
There is nothing I know of that can be put on the point surfaces, they are supposed to be bare metal. They burn over time, and need filing or replacing. The owner's manual says every 250 hours of use, file or replace the points, and set the point gap.
The point surfaces have to be flat and shiny, or not dirty or burned for the engine to run good.
Below is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing the points.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... e%2038.jpg

Below is a listing at TM Tractor for new points.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/el/367fp.htm

While you have the magneto apart, you could also remove the 2 screws that hold the rotor in place, and clean the gears and chamber, and grease the gears. Check and align the timing marks of the gears also. :)

Points file from Auto Parts store for the points. Other metal surfaces inside the cap can be cleaned with a small wire brush. A small rifle bore brush works on the plug wire towers. Corrosion/oxidation of dis-similiar metals is just something that happens. Don't know if there is a fix to prevent it. You can probably pick up a new set of points from NAPA or similar Auto Supply.

I'm not sure what this post is suggesting. The J4 magneto cap is held on by two clips, not screws. Possibly you have an incorrect magneto, or a different model magneto? I think maybe IH used some other models, such as Morse or Fairbanks, but maybe the cubs I have seen with those were owner replacements....

Confirm that your magneto serial number starts with J4.

A picture's worth a thousand words....

Use the "Attachments" tab below the screen where you respond or write a post. Follow the directions and attach a photo or two of your magneto. Then we'll be able to offer better help.

That's not the 'correct' mag for a Cub, but may work fine regardless. Remove the wire that goes to the magneto and check for spark. As the others have said, you should only have one wire that goes from the magneto to the switch. The switch simply opens and closes the path to ground for the magneto.
