Howard Gear Reducer

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Thu Oct 13, 2005 6:56 pm

I use my cub with flail mower to mow barn lot, fence rows, road ditches, and occasioanlly part of the yard. sometimes it gets a little ahead of me, especially the barn lot, and if I am cleaning a fence row that hasn't been mowed for a while it is interesting. I've wanted for several years to have a way of slowing my ground speed down while keeping up the mower speed.

Jack donovan came to my rescue by finding me a used Howard Gear Reducer at a price I could afford, and then Rick Prentis (billyandmillie) finished the rescue by making the missing parts for me. I am now a very happy cub owner. I took it down to a creek bottom where our renter fed cattle in bad weather for the last 2 or 3 years, and shifted it into low with the reducer engaged, and waded right through weeds and grass that were 2 or 3 feet over my head. Couldn't even see the front wheel most of the time.

speeds were with engine at 1700 rpm

gear normal reducer engaged
1 -------- 2.5 ------- 1.3
2 -------- 3.5 ------- 1.7
3 -------- 7.5 ------- 3.7
R -------- 2.9 ------- 1.3

speeds were read using a Garminn GPS III+

John:

Image on getting the reducer all hooked up.

Amazing what our friends will do to help us out. As you know I too have been the recipient of some of this TLC, and it sure does warm one's heart to know so many people really do care about how we feel and what we can do.

Guys, you ALL know what I mean when I say it is truly appreciated! There really is nowhere in the world quite like this forum :!: :D

It truly is a moving thing and I am so PROUD to be a member of this GREAT FAMILY :!: :!:

That sure is cool John!!!
I've posted on this before and would now like to freshen it up a bit. The topic of gears and options comes up from time to time. Super Cub makes various different gear ratios for the pullers and I'm wondering if there would be options that would be acceptable. The reducer is rare and can be expensive and the gears I'm told aren't all that bad price wise.
I personally would like to slow down 1st and turn 3rd into a working gear much slower than it is now. The Cub for me is really a 2 speed tractor as 3rd is like a road gear.

John,
Congrats on the speed reducer! I never really understood the signifigance of going slower under full power until my neighbor brought a ford 1700 over with a rototiller on the back of it. He was explaining to me that he couldnt use the tiller if he was in the high gear range. So now you can make till great garden beds now if you have a rototiller attachment  Billyand Millie i would love to meet you someday. I enjoy looking at pics of your work very much!

Bill, are you saying thatn there is someone out "there" that makes replacement gears to go in the transmission to change the ratios? I'd love to slow 1 st down a bit as John* says.
