Need a rebuilt carb!

Postby jakeesspoo » Sat Dec 23, 2017 9:51 am

My cub carb is leaking fuel from the welch plug. It is starting horrible, I believe it is immediately flooding out when I turn the gas on to the carb. I cleaned entire carb and re-assembled and still have the problem. I'm guessing this original IH carb kit is less than 5 years old with under 20 hours on tractor.

I'm self employed at my families shop and coming off a surgery so I'm way behind at work and have not had any spare time to mess with anything.

Does anyone sell re-built, ready to go carbs? I could send mine in then for the core charge. I'm here in Ohio and the cub is what I use to plow the drive with and it's currently snowing.

Let's try this to diagnose your problem a little better...

Disconnect the rubber hose going to the air cleaner, at the carburetor.

Without turning the fuel on, have a helper spray a good shot of carb cleaner into the carb air intake and you immediately attempt to start the tractor.

Let us know what the results were.

Merry Christmas!

I would get a new needle and seat from TM. They don't have the Viton coated tip. Also maybe a new gasket and verify the float is good. Put float in a bowl of water and look for bubbles. Check float height per manual. I just took a neglected carb and brought it back with a few new parts.

Also if the float is installed wrong the needle will keep falling out and gas running out fast.

Use hot water so the air inside the float expands and bubbles out through the leak if there is one.

Hi,
The needle and seat could be worn out and need replacing, if gas drips on the ground when the Cub is sitting. But they can drip because the float level is too high, or because there is dirt in the needle and seat.

If you replaced the needle and seat recently, you might have got parts that don't work right.
They have said on here that they don't know of rebuilt Cub IH carburetors.
The experts on here usually say it is better to rebuild an original carb.

Below are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the IH carburetor, if you need them.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cub_ ... 012-12.jpg

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/cub_ ... 012-13.jpg

The original needle and seat were all metal. Some of the guys on here say they work better than other types. Here is a listing at TM Tractor showing how they looked.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/5183fp.htm

The float should look like this one, from TM Tractor.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/655fp.htm

Set the float level accurately with a measure, some of the guys on here have said their carb would not work right until they set the level exactly.
Below is a page from the Cub service manual showing the float level, and float drop, both need setting. The IH Carb is in the upper pics, use those measurements, if you have an IH carb. Turn the top half with the float in place upside down, like the Zenith pic at the lower right, and measure the level.
The IH carb does not use the gasket in place to measure the level, the Zenith does, they are different in that way.

http://www.farmallcub.info/manuals/gss- ... 002-09.jpg

Tighten everything gently in or attaching to the carb, the metal is soft, and the threads can strip out.
You said you cleaned the carb, I would blow out all the passages with air while it is apart. Wear your safety glasses when using the air. :)

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story.

Less than 20 hours in 5 years is not much usage. How is your fuel tank for rust? Little bits of rust will keep the needle valve from seating and therefore causing leaks and flooding like you have. As the rust particles build up, they would start to block the fuel line and it would start starving for fuel.
Do you use an inline filter?

I'll look a little further into it. The needle in it now though is all brass and not a coated tip.

Place an ad in "The Vine" for work on your carburetor. Several folks on this board rebuild carburetors.

Take it to a CUBFEST. There's usually someone there that specializes in carb rebuilds.

Gene Dotson near De Graf Ohio.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.
