You never know what you'll find

Postby radioguy41 » Thu Nov 02, 2017 6:36 pm

It turns out this Cub is a bit more interesting than first thought. I went to replace the gear shift knob and discovered yellow paint under the old knob. OK, surprise #1, it seems the shifter was swapped out sometime in the past. Next I pulled off the rear drawbar (There are 2 on this Cub) to clean off the packed on crude under the bottomside in preparation of taking it to a shop to have the twist removed. Imagine my surprise (#2) as the more I scrapped the more white paint appeared. Now it's too old (1948) to be a white demo so apparently the drawbar was swapped as well. Makes me wonder what other surprises might be lurking under that red paint.

Lots of parts could be changed in the past 70 years!

Yep. I had a 1950 Willys CJ3A that had a WWII Ford GPW hood, two CJ2A fenders, a Willys MB grill & rear panel, M38 front seats, and early CJ2A windshield among other changes. We call them Frankenjeeps or Jeep salad. I guess you could call Cyrus a Cub salad.

I've seen that quite often in Jeeps. Although I've mainly owned CJ5s. I'm well acquainted with Jeep Salad.

I'd be surprised if mine is Cub Salad. My wife's Grandad bought it new and it stayed on his farm until 2002. The next "field modification" I find will be the first other than what was done during the '02 and what little I've done since then.
Waking up the ol' Cub

Nah, it's not leaking oil. It's just marking it's territory.

Not unusual for gear shift handles to break at the point where the pin goes through at the top of the spring. Mine has been replaced twice in the 50 yrs I've worked with it.
You said it had two draw bars. The other one might be the original.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over. :?:
