Cub 22

Postby Jim in SC » Fri Oct 27, 2017 6:54 pm

Picked up a Cub 22 sickle mower for my Cub today at auction in NC. Haven't had a good chance to look it over yet, but it looks complete and in good shape. The blades need a bit of work and I want to restore it, so i was hoping for some advice. It's International yellow - looks like the original paint. Does that sound right? Is there any way to date these mowers? How about a source of decals? Anyone have any ideas? I'll post some pictures, hopefully tomorrow. - Oh, one more question. I need a drive belt (from the PTO pulley to the large pulley shaft) - any idea the size, etc?

Thanks!

I'll measure mine tomorrow if no one else replies before then.

This appears to be the manual for it, if you haven't already seen it:

http://farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/download.php?fname=./files/Farmall%20Cub/Cub%20Attachments/Mowers/Cub-22%20Owner%27s%20Manual%20and%20Parts%20List%201-27-51%20OCR.pdf

A quick google suggests that the belt should be '5/8" Top Width X 46" Outside Measurement'

Hi,
The Cub 22 mowers were yellow from about the time the Cubs changed to yellow and white, in 1964, as far as I know. Maybe Jim B. will say if this is right.

Below is the Cub 22 mower owner's manual. The link above didn't work. It is for 3 different mowers on 3 different IH tractors. Use the info for the Cub, it is marked at the top of the pages that are not for all 3 models.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... index.html

Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new belt, it probably has the 4" drive pulley, but there was a 4 1/2" drive pulley too. They use a different belt. You could measure the pulley to be sure. :)

Depends on the pulley diameter.

I recall there was a 4" and 4 1/2" diameter.

Mine from '48 was blue with the exception of the board and arm.

Wow, GREAT info from everyone! And quick replies! I really appreciate all the responses, links, and information. I will be getting out to my trailer to unload my 22 today and will take a few pictures and try and post them tomorrow, in case anyone has interest. It's always fun getting a "new" piece of equipment and beginning a restoration, especially when the equipment will actually be used at some point. I'll be using the 22 in the spring to mow a plot of planted grass that I've been trying to figure out how to do right. This will do it!

Jim,
Just remember to always keep your fingers out from between the knives and cutter bar, no matter what position it's in, especially when putting it in the vertical travel position.

Peter - Great advice! I will do that. I'm working now on removing the cutting blade prior to restoration. I remember when I was a kid, working on my Dad's cousin's farm in Iowa - he had a Farmall M with a rear mount hydraulic sickle blade mower (late 50's - early 60's). I was only allowed around it after he had mowed a field and it was turned off and in the barn - then i "got" to lube it with a bucket full of used crankcase oil and a greasy brush. I learned though just how dangerous these sickle blade mowers can be. Wicked.

Thanks again for the reminder to be careful - always good advice around machinery and these mowers especially!

Mower looks good, by the way. Took a few pics this morning which I will share tomorrow.

A few pictures, as promised. I'm starting work on removing parts, cleaning them, and seeing if any need repair or replacement. Oh, the picture of the sickle on the trailer - also picked up a Stihl S-10 chainsaw from 1968 - it's in the wooden box (lower left on the trailer) and looks to be in very good condition - another project!

One of our members from Washington state has some great videos on youtube, and in one he uses a corrugated drain pipe, slit along one side, to cover the blades so they won't be as much of a safety hazard. I believe it's in this video he made.

Looks like you have the optional grass rods instead of the wooden board. Not sure if they did away with the wood board and went with the metal rods with the later versions but it was an option for the eirler ones.

Hi Pete, yes, you are right - it has the grass rods instead of the grass board. Not as good looking, but functional. Would that option date it? I'm thinking it's a 1964 or so, based on the color.
