It's not a Model A!

Postby Barnyard » Tue Oct 17, 2017 3:34 pm

Gary Dotson, Steve Butram and I were wandering around the Portland Indiana swap meet Friday when I found what looked like a drive shaft yoke. One end had a square opening and the other was a ten spline similar in size as a Cub PTO shaft. Gary and I thought it was not the right size, so I asked the seller what it was for. He said he had no idea, he had found it in a mess of stuff. It had a price take that said fify cents and asked if that was correct. He said it was, so I figured, what the heck, If it doesn't fit, I'm only out two thirds the cost of a beer. When I got back to my site I tried it on a Cub I had on my trailer and it fit perfect. I now have the piece I need for my fast hitch mower drive shaft.

Saturday morning the three of us were checking out some of the vendors close to us for the last time before leaving. We looked more closely at stuff and at the vendor right across from me Gary said, look at this. There laid another yoke just like the one I had bought. I asked that guy what it was and he said it was off the drive shaft of a Model A. I asked what his price was and he said $15.00. I probably should have gotten it too. Any way, if you ever need a ten spline yoke, start looking for junked Model A'a.

As Paul Harvey used to say "And now you know — the rest of the story."

Your right, I hate to burst your bubble, but it isn't a Model A either. Here is a link to a Model A u-joint.

Could it be a model T? I might have confused the two. Regardless, it is the correct spline for my project and cheap enough.

The A and T had essentially the same running gear.

Bill, the seller on Sat. morning said it was for a Model T. He seemed to know a little about it.

Was going to comment - certainly was NOT off of any Model A I've seen! Had mine apart from one end to the other and No square shaft s to be had. My guess would be that it was the drive knuckle to power a corn dump by a tractor (or some other power unit). The drive shaft on a corn dump was a square shaft ! I have seen some of them run thru the gears on a drive unit that was originally powered by horses walking around in a circle. They just eliminated the horses and hooked up a tractor w/the U joint you have and a short shaft w/square connections on both ends. Sorry to be giving away my age w/that info!!! Dusty B
