One way to get a Cub to cut in high grass get a 24 HP cub

Postby inairam » Tue Oct 10, 2017 7:22 pm

Saw this today

Innocent enough from the front. sporting a 15 hp engine on the drawbar.

It looks to me like the engine is started by pto on the Cub and I guess the operator would disengage the pto and uses the PTO pully as an idler pulley

So 24 drawbar hp Cub?

Just a guess here, but I'm thinking his PTO quit working - maybe.

I thought that but there are 2 things:

1) I did not see a place for a hand crank on the back, there is no starter that I saw, so how to start it if not with the PTO.
2) The work is nicely done. It would have been easier to fix the PTO than to do what was done here.

This owner was looking for HP upgrade on the mower deck.

I have thought of doing something like that add a pony engine run the mower deck with hydraulics like commercial mowers do.

If can match rpms that would be pretty powerful if pto was engaged with the "pony" motor running.

I think the point would be to keep the two motors seperate and have the Cub motor only worry about moving the tractor and let the pony motor handle spinnging the mower. At least I think that would be the easiest to engineer.

If that engine is driving the PTO and the PTO is engaged, the clutch won't do you much good.

Interesting.
IF auxiliary motor is started from tractor battery ,and is run independent of tractor engine ,then it simply replaces the tractors transmission/ p.t.o. shaft drive and powers the mower alone.
Synchronising torque between an auxiliary motor attached to a shaft driven by another( the tractor in this case) would be a feat. Rotation direction too...

Ponytail Steve on this facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/farmallcubs.partsinny/ did a similar thing.

This engine the output shaft is on the bottom making for a cleaner simpler install and a straight path for the belt to the mower

Now that’s an idea!
It would keep the blades running at full rpms allowing you to slow the forward speed through the heavy stuff without slowing the blades.
If it bogs, it’s not the Cub engine suffering.
That’s really what you’d want.

The biggest problem I see is stopping the mower to get on and off the tractor. You'd have to have a kill switch by the seat to shut the pony motor off, but then that requires restarting everytime you stop to pick up a stick. It would be a good idea if you could work around the safety aspect.

If you look left of the seat it looks like there are some controls there. That is the one thing I have learned to like about mowing with the 300 is I can pull the T/A lever and slow it down and still have it running fast.
