I have a 1951 Cub that was running fine but now only runs with the choke all the way on.
I searched the forum and have looked at the common things that would cause this.
I took the {Zenith} carb off and cleaned the jets and passages with carb cleaner, checked fuel filter and fuel inlet screen, and ran it with the gas cap off.
At first I thought it had set too long with 10% ethanol fuel in it for too long. So I drained the fuel and put in some non-ethanol fuel.
Thanks in advance!
Ron

Re: Cub will run onlt with choke on
Sounds like fuel starvation. Check outlet inside fuel tank for blockage.

Fuel starvation or a carb gasket is cracked and sucking air.

There is a nut on the bottom front of the carburetor. Take it off and look inside there is a jet there that may have an obstruction. Take it out and clean well.

If you have a zenith carb the elbow on the inlet has a bronze strainer that can clog.

Hi,
The main jet is at the lower rear of the Zenith carburetor. There is a cap over it. Try removing it and cleaning it, like was said above.
Below are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the carb. The cap and jet are numbers 18 and 20 in the pic.
I think I have read on here you need a screwdriver that fits the jet exactly, so it doesn't slip.

Re: Cub will run only with choke on
Well, I'm back in business, Cub runs like a top.
I took the carb off again and took it a part, soaked it in carb cleaner for a couple of hours, then blew it out with compressed air.
Thanks to all you guys that took the time to offer help and suggestions!
Ron
