6V LED lights for cub

Postby ShawnAgne » Wed Sep 13, 2017 10:08 am

Remember seeing a couple threads but I have the tear drop lights on my 52. Had the link on Steiner for them but lost it. Does anybody know the model I want? Trying to find them.

I've looked into this a little bit, and it does look like you would need to dive into some electronics.

6 volts is a little on the low side for the forward voltage (the voltage in which a diode turns on) of a lighting diode, and the positive ground doesn't help things either.

You are likely going to need a DC-DC converter to boost the -6v up to 12v, then regular 12v LED drivers and lights would plug in.

Converting the tractor to 6 volts negative ground would mean an easier job in finding a converter, as while some DC-DC converters work with negative voltages, it's rather unusual.

You do not need to boost for the replaceable bulbs. I purchased 6 volt LED that work on 6 volt positive ground - no mods.

The link to bulb for sale on ebay in the previous post still works but now it says 12 volts I sent a message to the person/ company on ebay selling the bulb asking what happen to the 6-volt version.

This is what I purchased

2x 6V 1156 BA15S 50W CREE LED White Car Brake/Turn/Tail /Reverse Light Bulb ( 321261443386 )

The sealed beam lights I have not found in 6 volts except at Steiner but those units are polarity sensitive. On sealed beam lights you need to consider the step up transformer for LEDs

I used one of these boost converters to power a couple of 12V Larsen PAR36 LED units on my 6V positive ground tractor with great success. I'm pretty sure I can illuminate the moon now. :{_}:

More details here starting at the bottom of page 3. Note that I tried different converters first but they didn't work out: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=90927&hilit=converter&start=30

Urbish this is a replacement bulb in the tear drops not a sealed beam light the pancake and round back lights used. Even converted to 12 v LED they are not as bright as the Larsens.

Urbish,

Did you need need to use a gasket to seal the light in the tear drop mount? If so what did you use?

The gaskets are available at TM and I have used shrink wrap tube ( electricity connections) on occasion

I am not sure the Larsens will fit in the tear drops

On the round back lights where I have used the Larsons I did not see a need for the gasket. They are sealed beam lights.

My 12v tractors have been in the weather all summer without the gasket and without issue.

I read PAR36 does fit the guide teardrops, though I believe it is a slightly loose fit. That can be corrected by wrapping electrical tape around the outside perimeter of the bulb.

You will want the gaskets because they also cushion the bulb against the metal shell, preventing them from breaking or scratching from the vibrations.

Those direct-fit LED bulbs that fit in the bayonet socket... You may as well use a Bic lighter for headlights IMHO...

I like the Larsens much better myself. Just too bad they don't make them in 6V.

The problem with 6V is that the common LEDs used in these things are 4V. They are wired three in series for 12V systems. One will burn out on 6V, and two will not light.

Matt

the ones i used are designed for automotive application and produce a little more light than the OEM incandescent bulb at less than 1/3 the amps.
It keeps the original look behind the OEM lens, yields equal or better performance than OEM part while saving a great deal on amps. It is also not as involved of a project as converting to 12v or installing a step up transformer.

I purchased a number of duds before I found the 2x 6V 1156 BA15S 50W CREE LED White Car Brake/Turn/Tail /Reverse Light Bulb
the guy in China on Ebay does not have them anymore it seems. But if you google " 2x 6V 1156 BA15S 50W CREE LED White Car Brake/Turn/Tail /Reverse Light Bulb" they show up.

If you are not concerned with the original look and want real light for night operation the Larsons are the way to go. I cut grass at night now with those lights on my 12 volt cubs.

My tractor came from the previous owner with aftermarket black rubber housings installed that the sealed-beam kind of snaps into, so I just popped out my 6V sealed beam incandescent assemblies and popped in the new ones.

Gotcha, bulbs are coming tomorrow so I'll see how they fit. May have to use the hose I split in two for the sealed beam bulbs to hold them in place. Thanks for the assistance.
