leaking oil out the shifter

Postby john2189 » Mon Sep 04, 2017 9:56 pm

This is the second year ive been using the 49 to mow grass and it just started leaking oil out the top of the shifter where the ball and cap with the spring on it. Its kept in the garage, so i dont think water could get in. I always check all the oil levels in the spring before I start mowing, so I know its not overfull. Is there a seal or something in the shifter?

Condensation will get in when parked inside. If oil is coming out the shifter, pull the cover. Let us know what you find.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

How are you checking the oil levels? Do you realize the transmission only requires 3.5-4 pints of oil. There is also a Fill Level Plug on the left side of the transmission housing. Not real easy to spot unless you know it is there.

My immediate thought is "are you OK?" Good, now flip the tractor back on it's wheels.

Second thought is define leaking. Just oily wet looking? A steady run streak? Exxon Valdez? Could be just some excess grease getting hot and running down out from under the cap.

I seriously doubt that the transmission is completely full. NOBODY has axle seals that good!

Hi,
I saw a 1949 Cub that had some oil come out the shifter too, like you said. It doesn't hurt anything, if it is just a little, and not often. Wipe it up with a rag. The shifter should not feel wornout moving it. If it does, it could probably use some repair.
There is no seal there on the lever moving parts. :)

Does the gear case have a vent that might be plugged up?

No vent other than around the gear stick.

What type lubricant did you use in the transmission? Any other leaks/wet places that you noticed?

My 2 cubs 48 and 49 both seep a little oil around the shifter, but only when they work hard for an extended time.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Ok it takes 3 hours of continuous mowing with a woods 59 to cut grass, it didn't leak last year and it just started leaking the last two mowings,

Ive used my 72 with a 59 woods for the past 7 years to do the same, and its dry as a bone...

Oil mixed with water? I'd change the oil first.

To me any leaks are unacceptable.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
