I have the generator off my '53 cub disassembled and ready for paint. The bushing and bearing need to be replaced; therefore, I decided to swap the brushes as well... Here is a picture of the brush hood off the generator. 6 Volt, positive ground system. The generator's tag is missing... the rivets apparently corroded and let the tag loose some time ago.
I went with the three brush kit (my brushes are in good condition anyway) just to get the bearing and bushing. Does anyone know why my generator has these braided brushes? Sources to purchase these?

Re: Generator Confusion!
You need the ones with the wires., however you need 3 brushes. The ones with the notch in them are for holders that make an electrical connection through the spring that hold the brushes against the armature rather than a lead. Your original brushes look to be in very good shape, I would not have worried about changing them. Should be able to take your old brush to a real auto parts store and with the knowledge it is a Delco they can find them.

Re: Generator Confusion!
Thanks, that was my assessment as well. I wonder why My particular generator has that type of brush holder. Oddly enough, the starter has the spring loaded holders. I might be able to use those three brushes in the starter one day. I never thought an O'rielly or Auto Zone would be able to get those wired brushes... Napa? Anyhow, It looks like I have good brushes, so I have plenty time to find new ones when I need to.

Re: Generator Confusion!
Hi,
Below are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the generator, if you want to see them.
Yes, NAPA has or can get parts for Cubs.

A 1953 Cub would have come with a 1100501 generator, that is a gen for use with the voltage regulator. They came out in mid year 1950. You could ask NAPA for brushes for that number gen.

O'reilly maybe, Autozone very doubtful. NAPA or Consolidated Yes on the brushesxraycajun wrote:Thanks, that was my assessment as well. All the cub generators I have ever worked on used the brushes with wires. 2 of the brushes had spaghetti (predecessor of heat shrink). The one connected to ground was not insulated.
The carbon brushes will not work on the starter due to current load. Starter brushes are made of copper since they have to carry between 50 and 100 amps.

Re: Generator Confusion!
The nearest Napa is a good ways away. I stopped at the O-reilly just outside my subdivision just to see if they maybe could get the part. I brought the part number you guys provided and they found the brushes! For $3.79 a set, I decided to go ahead and get them. I'll change the brushes while I have this thing taken apart. Thanks again! Next time I won't doubt my local parts store!

Re: Generator Confusion!
I currently have the bearing and bushing coming from Brillman and the brushes on the way to my local O'rielly. Should have it back together in a few days.
