What Helicoil for Radiator Bolt?

Postby stevenforehand » Wed Aug 23, 2017 12:10 pm

Hi Guys!

My poor 49 Cub seems to have a stripped bolt hole for one of the radiator bolts. What size helicoil would it take to repair this issue? I've used helicoils in the past for the head bolts without issue and thought it would work here as well.

Thanks!

Steven

The radiator bolts are 5/16-18. You can probably get the helicoils in several lengths so you'd need to measure the depth of the hole in the casting and order accordingly.

5/16 x18 thread. Do NOT drill too deep, they are above radiator tank. I figure you realize the tank part, but mentioned it anyway. If coils are too long, I slice top off with a Dremel cut off wheel after installing.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I trim the helicoils to the proper length with a pair of cutting pliers before I install them if I don't have the proper length. Make the cut on an angle so the threads of the bolt will engage the helicoils naturally. I use a lacquer paint to glue in the helicoils. We did this on the 155mm howitzers for the us army while assembling them. Everything was helicoiled.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

If you do drill too deep, just use RTV sealant instead of neversieze for that bolt.
