Infected so bad that I'm already looking at a replacement for Rocky!

Speaking of Rocky, we found this birthmark? at the RMCF.

Does anybody else's tractor have one of these?

Hi,
Your serial number plate is faded, below is a listing from TM Tractor showing what they originally looked like, if you want to see it.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/sp/101fp.htm

Below is the 1949 Cub owner's manual, if you don't have it. The experts on here recommend that people read it, it has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication.
There is a table of contents on page 1. :)

Tim, Tim Talleur (tst) makes a decal overlay that covers all of the SN plate but the 1800 and SN. Makes them look almost new again.

Tim is referring to the dot that is just to the left of the bottom rivet of the serial plate, not the plate itself.

Was it stamped into the casting or something inserted into a drilled hole?

Yea, sorry about the confusion Glen. I should have cropped the picture, my bad! The small circle in the cast engine block is what I am referring to. First glance I thought it was a dowel and wondered how is the engine going to separate from the bolster with that in there? duh

Frank in NE inspected the bolt hole beneath it this past weekend and said it looked like there was a small crack in there. Maybe he can elaborate.

I will remove the bolt tomorrow and try to photograph and post any findings.

Maybe an attempt to stop drill the crack, if there is one? Then fill the hole with a pin. The mystery continues.

Well, it didn't take Matlock to figure this one out!

After taking Rocky apart and inspection, we have determined that a new block and front bolster are in order. I have a front bolster replacement.

In evaluating our options for a block replacement, I learned that JP Tractor Salvage has blocks for sale that have been magna-flux and boiled for $250. For $475 you can get a block with new 0.04" piston kit. This seems to be a fair price as rebuilding one from scratch will run $1,000-1,300.00.

Has anyone had experience with these engine blocks?

Hi,
You didn't say what is wrong with the front bolster. :)
