1968 ihcub

Postby Jamesk » Mon Aug 21, 2017 9:17 pm

I found a 1978 oh cub a couple weeks ago. Hasn't run I 15 or so years. Put Marvil oil in all cylinders for a week or so. Long story short has compression and cranks on starter fluid. Noticed the carb is warped and the discharge tube is missing from the carburetor. I purchased the repair and part number books for the tractor. I would like to buy a new carb but not sure where or which to buy. Prices are all over the place. Not sure about the cheaper Chinese carbs. Which run about $135. Any advice is appreciated.

"John", 1952 Cub
"Paul", 1951 Cub
"George", 1958 LoBoy Cub with Wagner 45 Loader
"Ringo", 1977 Cub

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story.

For best results, steer clear of Chinese parts wherever possible. Some people have had good luck. Many have not.

Forum sponsors Hamilton Bobs, JP Tractor Salvage and TM Tractor Supply ought to have what you need. Links to all three are at the bottom of the page. Or post a wanted ad in the classified section here (the Vine).
The carburetor can be rebuilt and warped top straightened. We have members who rebuild carbs if you don't want to do it yourself. Again, post an ad in the Vine.
Also, many manuals are available on this site, but I think you have to have a couple of posts under your belt to gain access.

Your title says 1968, but your text says 1978. I know a '78 would have had a Zenith carb originally. I'm not sure if a '68 would have had a Zenith or an IH carb. Floats, gaskets and such will be different between the two. TM has good pictures of everything they have, so you can use them as a reference to identify what you have if somebody doesn't post pictures here first.

Welcome to the site! You'll find all the information and assistance you need right here!

Hi,
The 1968 Cub came with an IH carb, up until mid 1975, I think, when they changed to Zenith.
Below is a page from the Cub parts manual showing the IH carb, and it says the engine serial number when they changed. :)

Thanks guys I was afraid of the cheap carburetor. I am mechanically inclined but have not the skill to straighten the old carb. But a new one is very pricey. What would it cost to have the old carb fixed? I have purchased the parts and repair manuals for the tractor. Hope to get this guy restored.

Big secret: ALL the carbs are Chinese made, all in the same factory. You're just paying more from one source over another.

That said, the Chinese clone of the original IH that I put on my Loboy a few years ago worked fine.

That said, there is no reason to buy a new carburetor if the one you have is complete and not smashed to pieces. It can be straightened. It can be overhauled. A few members of this group offer straightening services. One such member "tst" did mine and did an excellent job of it.

As a friendly constructive criticism, you may well do better with responses, and offers to straighten the carb if you had used a subject line that was more descriptive of the actual problem. "1968 ihcub" is a pretty generic subject and doesn't provide the casual reader any clue as to what your question is, or entice them to click on it and read the content.
