sicklebar pto pulley lose

Postby Mark Antal » Tue Aug 15, 2017 6:49 am

Why can't you tighten the pto pulley for the sickle bar?
If it had a design like the Woods belly mower pto pulley it work.
I saw one on line that was sawed through from the pulley belt V to the splines. It looks like it would work but I wonder if it eats belts.

There were a couple different designs for that pulley. The early design simply slid on the shaft and had a hole for a cotter pin. When that design developed wear issues, the pulley was redesigned to use both a pinch bolt and a cotter pin. I don't know which style pulley you have but the pinch bolt style pulley will usually tighten well to the shaft and work well without loosening.

Hi,
Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new Cub 22 mower drive pulley.
This is the 4 1/2" pulley. There was also a 4" pulley used on the newer mowers, not sure when they started using those.
They are both the same style.
You put it on the PTO shaft with the V belt groove to the rear, then put in a cotter key through the small hole, and a 3/8" bolt with a lock washer and nut go through the bigger hole, and you tighten it on the PTO shaft.
If the PTO shaft splines are worn from running it loose, it probably won't tighten. Then you need a new PTO shaft also, if you want it to be tight, and not make noise from it running loose.

Here are pics of the 4" pulley at TM Tractor, they don't sell the 4" pulley, I guess.

Here is the Cub 22 owner's manual, if you need it. It is for 3 different mowers, for 3 different models of IH tractors. Just use the info for the Farmall Cub, it says at the top of the pages when info is for 1 model of tractor.
It has a section for cutter bar maintenance in it. :)
