Yes, they did. There are 2 small holes in the hood so you could oil it as well.

I would assume so. Hand crank with no lights and magneto ignition.

Mine has the magneto ignition but i don't see where it ever had a gen. i didn't know if it needed a Gen. to keep the Mag. fired up or not.... I still can't get a spark from one of the spark plug wires .... I ordered another coil for it hoping it will do the trick....

Re: cub gen.
Hi,
The starter, generator, and lights, and all the wiring for them was extra cost in 1947. IH called it electric starting and lighting.
So if you didn't buy the extra cost electrical equipment, you got a Cub without that. It had a magneto, and 1 wire going from the magneto to the ignition switch. The hand crank was how it was started.
Here are pages from the Cub owner's manual showing the info.
The 3rd page below showed how it looked under the hood with the electrical parts.

http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... age-59.jpg
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... age-33.jpg
The magneto needs no battery or generator, it makes it's own power. Be sure to file or replace the ignition points if they are burned. It makes a difference in how a magneto or Battery Ignition unit works to have flat and shiny point surfaces.
If one spark plug wire does not work, the wire could need replacing, or if it is connected to the spark plug, and it doesn't work, the spark plug might be dirty, or has quit working.

Re: cub gen.
In addition to the cost, it removes a major system and the associated problems. It does put a bit more focus on making sure it is tuned and timed correctly.
If I ever get an '47 I was thinking of removing the lights, starter, battery, and generator. I just hand cranked my '49 with a mag this weekend. I enjoy it.

Yes, the extra cost was $46.00. Please note this in this Sept. 25, 1947 invoice:
Used to own this puppy, but it now resides in southern Illinois.

Re: cub gen.
No, it does not need a generator to keep the magneto running. If it is only misfiring on one plug, you most likely have a bad spark plug, spark plug wire, or distributor cap. A coil would cause all of the spark plugs to give trouble. If it has been setting a while you may have a valve stuck rather than an ignition problem.zebzeb wrote:Mine has the magneto ignition but i don't see where it ever had a gen. i didn't know if it needed a Gen. to keep the Mag. fired up or not.... If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I knew some of the John Deere 2 cylinders had hand crank/electric start options but had no idea a Cub did. Thanks for the info!

$3.50 for a set of front weights? $18.25 for rear weights? How did they make them for that even then?

Re: cub gen.
Remember this was Sept, 1947, introduction and promotion. IH was trying to get the tractor in the hands of the farmers and could have been selling below cost. After all they had done quite well on other tractors in the lineup and sold a lot of them.
