grounding question

Postby MikeinRI » Sun Aug 06, 2017 12:43 pm

Hi All,

I just finished repainting the '52 Cub and before I reinstalled all the electrical components I thought I would run this by you all. As far as reinstalling the regulator, starter and generator .... should I clean the new paint off to the bare metal of the tractor for a good ground. It's a 6 volt positive original.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you need clean metal at all the connections.

I just use my dremel with a sanding wheel installed. The critical one is the battery box I find. I clean a nickel size spot on all four mounting holes on tractor and box. I then use a small amount of good clean grease at these spots to keep corrosion at bay. Do the same thing when you mount ground cable to side of box. Saves a lot of heartache down the road.

If you get a 14" flat breaded ground cable you can run the ground wire inside the box to the mounting bolts on the battery box and not the sheet metal of the battery box. Different from original but It reduces the importance of the connection between the battery box and the rear axel/ transmission.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
