Postby Roshambo » Wed Aug 02, 2017 9:06 pm

:worthy: :hattip:

Well y'all I've gone from never owning a Tractor to completing everything in the lubrication guide/recommended maintenance schedule in my manual within the last few weeks.

The tractor barely ran before and now it runs beautifully.

Never would have done it without your guidance. You have my thanks.

Huge Kudos to Glen and Chip.....

MX Completed:
All lubrication/fluid items serviced via manual.
Removed hood, drained old fuel/degreased entire chassis.
Removed fuel bowl, cleaned, replaced screen and seals.
Removed, replaced, gapped old plugs, wires, cap, rotor condenser and points.
Broke free mower blades, reground, balanced and reinstalled.
Lubed everything on mower as well.
Drained radiator/replaced coolant.
Filled tires.
Fixed uncalibarated throttle linkage.
Replaced missing/unserviceable hardware.
Replaced Gas Cap.
Replaced Radiator Cap.
Replaced battery box.
Replaced ground cable.
Rebuilt Carb.
Checked compression in each cylinder (150).
Timed tractor w. timing light.
Drained touch control, refilled and troubleshoot.
Washed the Tractor up nice...
Installed U.S. and CSA Battle Flag magnets on either side of gas tank..

All I can say is the grass better watch out. I'm coming for it this weekend

I've mowed before but it's been choppy. I'll let you know what the difference is..

I forgot to mention. In my ignorance of how engines work I went in to wipe some oil off my spark plug porcelain... while it was running (without thinking).

That didn't feel too good, Hah.

So the last thing is to be sure the mower is set up properly to give you a good cut. Other than general maintenance and sharp blades, you should be sure that, when at cutting height, the front of the blade (with blade positioned fore and aft) is about 1/4" lower than the rear tip of the blade. That way the blade only cuts the grass once.

Rick- how would I do that when cutting height may change depending on terrain, etc?

Set the 1/4", front of deck lower height on a flat level surface. Forget about the terrain differences/variations.
I have an excuse. CRS.

How will I remember this angle? Should I set this as the lowest point on the PTO adjustment lever knobs? I won't be able to use it to climb back up but thats ok if I get consistent Mow.

I assume the way to adjust has to do with the number of links on the chain.

My process with the tractor/mower on a level surface:
1. Adjust the lift/mower height to the desired cutting height with the blades parallel to the travel.
2. Raise or lower the rear of the mowing deck where it attaches to the mule drive to get the rear end of the blades 1/4 inch or so higher than the front end of the blades. You can also probably use a 2 ft level lying on the mower deck parallel to the line of travel to get the rear of the deck slightly higher than the front.

Hi,
It probably tells how to adjust that in the Woods 59 owner's manual.
You would have to change the round bar position up or down, in the 4 holes at the rear, if it like the mower I saw. You have to take the mower loose from the tractor to move the round bar.
Turn the right and left blades straight forward and measure with a tape or ruler, and see if they are lower at the front of the blades, than at the rear.
Or use the level, like Stan said above. :)

If you have a woods you can also try to find caster wheels for the front of the deck. They ride on the ground and the lift chains are slack. Makes for a better cut and consistent cut hieght.

Thanks much. I actually do have caster wheels but the rod that slides up into the sleeve and attaches to the wheel is bent badly, so I can't drive the deck on the wheels.

The sleeve is also bent. I think I may need to order a complete new right side caster wheel, sleeve, rod, etc. Anyone know where I could buy that?

Not sure if it's possible to bend that stuff back..

You can try a WANTED add on the VINE, Classified forum. If you're handy with a torch and welder, the parts can be repaired, check for the right size pipe and a rod for the shaft. Schedule 80 pipe of the correct ID works well for the sleeve.
