Weld nuts for square nose the light mounts?

Postby inairam » Mon Jul 10, 2017 9:21 am

My 1975 square nose came to me with the lights not mounted. When I went to mount the lights I noticed the 5/8 weld nuts were missing. The back side of the hood looks different than my round nose in terms of it does not look welded in that area.

Did they use rivet nuts, clips, or weld nuts on the later square nose? is there a source or or just look at McMaster carr or fastenal.

On mine, I believe there's a nut on the inside and a nut on the outside, nothing welded on, and they just tighten against each other, clamping the hood in the middle.

Both of ours have a nut welded on the inside of the hood and the nut on the outside tightens up against the hood to make sure the light bar is held into position.

the nut is very poorly welded in 3 spots from the factory, I work on a lot of square nose, probably 75% have the welds broke loose, the bolts for the stud gets rusted then when it is twisted the nuts just pop loose, you have to look hard just to see where the spot welds were as they weren't much

That would be correct for the Cubs you list in your signature.

On a square nose, I'm not sure if the nut was ever welded on the inside.

I know he says they're welded on, but on my 67 there is absolutely no evidence of the nuts ever having been welded, not even small tack welds.
