Squeaking in rearend

Postby J3 Driver » Thu Jul 06, 2017 10:08 am

So my son's cub has developed at squeaking sound in the top of the right final drive. Looking at the parts book seems there is a couple of bearings there.

My question before I tear into this is is there anything that lubes these bearings or are they done with splash from the gear oil in the transmission and final drive.

If I run the Cub in third gear for 5-10 min then it will go away in second and first gear.

This cub has been sitting for about 10 years prior to Christmas of 16 so things are starting to rear their ugly heads.

Thanks in advance.

At the top of the finals are the brakes as well, try and look in through the hole where the brake rod goes in with a flashlight and see if anything has moved or if a brake band is crooked or if the brake banding has came off the brake band. The brake drums are held onto the shaft with a set screw and can be slid on the shaft (they can come loose). And yes you are correct, the bearings are oiled from the bull gears slinging oil up there.

Hi,
I have seen on a Cub where the brake lining will make a squeaking sound when the Cub was moving. It's just the lining touching on the brake drum as the drum turns. On the one I saw, the squeaking would go away after it was run for a while.
Hopefully you have checked all the final drive oils. The final drives have their own oil, separate from the transmission. There is a plug on each final drive above the oil pans. The owner's manual tells about it.
It could be the brake lining squeaking, or something wrong inside the final drive, hard to say without being there. :)

Before tearing anything down, check the 4 wheel bolts for tightness. That might be it...

after checking the wheel lugs and the center to wheel bolts for tightness if you think it is coming from the top of the final you can just pop the 4 bolts off the cover and the bearing will be right there, if it is dry and rusty you have a problem, should at least be wet
