I restored my '51 Cub in 2015, including removing the head and removing the radiator. I've used it numerous times to plow or disc an acre of sandy soil. All went well with the plowing/discing, but the last time I disc'ed the tractor began to overheat. I had to top it off with water a number of times. Considering the Cub is cooled with a passive cooling system, e.g. it's not pressurized (convection cooling), anyone have any ideas why it's overheating?
Thanks!
Jim

Re: Overheating Cub
How much have you had to add to it? You can't fill it all the way to the top or it will overflow because of expansion. Your overflow tube isn't broken off right at the radiator is it? Not that that makes much difference but it will make it look worse than it actually is.

Tighten fan belt??
Clean air side of radiator?
Head gasket blown?
So...it takes very little slip for the fan to not move enough air. Very little restriction on the air side makes a big difference on cooling capacity. Cooling systems are NEVER big enough to overcome the heat gain a blown head gasket puts into the water.
I always start with the cheapest and easiest and work toward the expensive ones...

Check the radiator fins, could be clogged with debris.ntrenn wrote:I always start with the cheapest and easiest and work toward the expensive ones...

If you are getting coolant boiling out the overflow that is normal if you have filled it over capacity.
My experience has been that the radiator will find it's own level while you are loading the engine. Check the level cold the fluid should be just above the fins. You need to allow for expansion in the top of the tank.
You my want to consider adding antifreeze to the system if you have the possibility of freezing temps. Frozen radiator castings are a much bigger issue than coolant boiling out the radiator overflow.
