Neutral Safety Switch

Postby StaffordCub » Mon Jun 19, 2017 8:59 am

Saw a post from 2011 called Stranded in the Field. Gave good insight into this switch but I have some questions. I have a 1976. Recently I have had to depress the clutch pedal a couple times while turning the key switch to get it to start. Today it tried to start and then nothing and no lights. Switched out the battery to a good battery from my other cub. Got lights. Turned the key and it clicked twice. Then nothing and no lights. How can I tell if this is the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch? Does the safety switch control power to the lights as well? Saw that this switch has a solenoid that impacts the starter. A good day to mow before the big storms hit and I am dead in the water. Help me Obiwan Kenobe, you're my only hope!

Is this for a numbered Lo-Boy? Either way, your symptoms (got lights, click, then nothing) indicate a bad ground or high resistance connection. When you swapped out the battery something got moved enough to make contact for the lights to work. Upon triggering the starter, that contact arced, then lost connection. I would check condition of battery cables and what they're attached to on both ends. If you have a clamp-on replacement battery clamp, these are notorious for this type of symptom.

I apologize if this comes as a double posting. I checked the ground connections and batt cables and all look good and tight. I unplugged the neutral switch connector and shot WD40 in on the blades and wiggled the push button. Checked the ignition switch connections. Turned the key and pushed in the clutch over and over. Tried the lights and they worked one time until I turned the key and then they cut out. I have another 76 cub. The previous owner of this cub apparently bypassed the neutral switch (on this cub there isn't any metal plate on the clutch pedal and the switch is gone) and he put a piece of wire in the connector from one side to the other. If I do this on the cub with issues, can I rule out the safety switch if it starts? I don't want to burn anything up. I would replace the switch if bad.

Yes, if you wire a jumper in the safety switch, you can rule out the problem. However, the symptoms you've noted have nothing to do with the safety switch. The safety switch and starter solenoid are not wired into the light circuit. The only thing in that safety switch circuit is the ignition system.

Your key switch is failing. Take the key out and shoot some WD-40 into the key hole. Then put the key back in and try it. The contacts inside the switch become corroded. The WD-40 may work for a bit, maybe even a year, but I'd bet you'll be replacing a key switch in the future.

Thanks to all. After checking all connections again, I found that the positive cable on the battery was just a bit loose. Pushed it on 1/8 inch and tightened it. Lights came on and tractor started up. Thanks for clearing up the role of the safety switch. Now I have a better handle on what that does and what it does not do. I saved the schematic diagram from the links below. Thanks for that.

You never answered my first question: What are you working on? As far as I know, standard Cubs never had a neutral switch (maybe the late models did?). Is this a numbered Lo-Boy or a Cub Cadet?

Well, yes and no. As mentioned above, late standard Cubs had a switch that was called a "neutral starting switch". In reality, it was a depressed clutch switch. no way for the starting system to know what gear the tractor was in.

Hi,
Here are pages from the Cub parts manual showing the starter safety switch, and the starter solenoid under the platform.
The safety switch is number 27 in the pic, 50 and 51 are other parts for it. :)
