Light switch

So, any thoughts on how to get the screws off of the light switch...they appear to be pretty brittle...penetrating oil and hope?

Cut the wires, take the switch off the tractor and use a screwdriver and use what's left of the wire to help twist the screw. It shouldn't take much to get them off, they are screwed into brass.

This is one time that the size of the screwdriver blade really makes a difference.

.....I'm a pistol instructor and RSO and work on pistol and rifles...Wheeler makes a variety of gunsmithing screwdriver sets that are a necessity for working on various size screws I encounter..You can get a starting set for around 12.99 on Amazon...The size of the blades vary in the set...Great addition for a toolbox...Dave :tractor:

If you can hold the blade that the screw fastens to with needle nose locking pliers you're less risk of breaking the part on the switch.

Got them all, the penetrating oil worked overnight. Don't know if the ignition and light switch work, but I have a start.

There are 2 or 3 screws that hold the two halves of the switch together. It can be disassembled and the contacts cleaned. That fixed mine at the bash last year, the headlight contacts were green, polished them up and it worked perfectly.

Now that it is apart and ready for rewiring, I really only want Headlights on, Headlights and Taillight on, Off. Since the dimmer resister is in tough shape, can't I just remove it and hook up power in at 2:00, headlights at 12:00, taillight at 7:00 and have it function as described?

....If no one else posts I'll look at my snowplow tractor in the morning...Got to leave at the moment...But I wired that one similarly and incorporated headlights on, headlights and a rear flasher with rear red lights flashing under the triangle sign for plowing at night on,and off using the stock switch, so I don't know why you couldnt..( It was awhile ago though )..In the meantime , check it all with your voltmeter, it should tell you everything you need to know.....Dave

A multimeter set to resistance can tell you if the switch works. If a position shows as open or high resistance (>100 ohms) then the contacts need to be cleaned.

The same can be done for the field or dimmer resistors to see if they work.

right on the switch in general, thanks. But lets say it works okay...I don't want to use the dimmer feature (assuming it is Hi/Lo beam) unless I am mistaken about its function. I only want Off/Front Lights/Front and Rear Lights.

Disconnect the dimming resistor and swap the headlight and rear light wires on the switch.
