New gearshift lever- Update

Postby Bill Hudson » Fri May 26, 2017 9:04 pm

This is a project that has been on a back burner (way back) for a while. I once had a Cub with a modified gearshift lever that was a bit longer than normal and I liked it a lot and vowed to make something similar. So here goes:
Get one of Cub Cadet levers with two bends in it
    Disassemble as needed
Fire up the acetylene torch and heat the bends to straighten them out
    Prepare and paint

The result is to go from this:

To this:

This might be a bit longer than needed and I may cut a couple of inches off, however, I'm happy to have the longer gearshift lever. The second one will be completed soon.

Nice work, Bill.
I made extenders for both of my Lo-Boys.
Love them, especially the one with the loader on it.

I thought I remember a post about George Willer welding a few inches of bar on all of his standard Cub gearshifts.

Dave,

Yes, your memory is correct, George did weld extensions on the gearshift. I never saw the need to do that until I used my Cub with the longer lever. I'm not the welder George was so modifying a CC lever was a better way for me to accomplish my objective.

Dave,

I measured the length last night and I have forgotten the length, however, I remembered that the new one is 5 3/4" longer than the standard shifter. As I noted earlier, I may shorten it a bit, the reason being that it creates a bit of clutching difficulty when in 2nd gear. I moved the seat back but have not tried it since, that is a project for today. I don't recall the longer lever being a problem on the Cub that did have a longer lever.

I'll keep you posted on my results later today.

Dave,

The long one is 14 1/2" long and the original one is 8 3/4" long. Both were measured from the collar welded to the lever.

An update on the long one after moving the seat back as far as it would go; When in second gear it still tends to interfere with the ability (sometimes necessity) to engage the clutch quickly. I may still have to remove an inch or two, however, I'm not there...yet.

Snow will be here soon so I needed to get the gearshift shortened since it was too long and interfered with shifting when in second gear. I think cutting off two inches will be about right. I'll be doing a lot of shifting between second and reverse while plowing snow, so it was essential to make the modification before the white stuff arrives. I'll let you know how it works out.

After several hours of quality seat time plowing snow, shortening the gearshift lever two inches was just right for me. Your experience may be different based upon the length of your legs and the way you shift gears. I don't know why I waited so long to do it. I'm really pleased with the results.

I like it, plan to do the same with mine, although I was thinking about also doing a custom shift knob, pearl white like an old 4 speed shifter in a GTO
