How many OE Cubs left?
Hello,
While restoring my first Cub, I noticed it was impossible to keep the tractor original due to parts breakage, i,e. cracked block, broken ears, bolsters, etc.
In looking to restore #2 as close to its original form as possible, other than the date codes, what should I look for to confirm its originality? It is a 1949 serial # 79645.
How many of you have OE Cubs?
Regards,
Rockfarmer

Re: How many OE Cubs left?
I would like to submit some photo's of the '49 for those discerning eyes. I realize the alternator, coil and fuel line are replacements, but anything else that may not be original, I would appreciate you pointing it out.
Thanks again.
Engine Serial 80322

Front Bolster
Right Final...Left final has the same info.

First thing I noticed is that the TC block is different different than on my 49' I'm told mine is an "early" block but I don't know the difference.

Tim, I don't think the hose clamps had that worm gear in 49, more like 2 wires with screw on top.

TM Tractor still carries the Wittek tower clamps that were on the early Cubs.

Re: How many OE Cubs left?
Most, if not all, of the hex head bolts would be the dot-head (like those holding the hydraulic block onto your touch control). It depends on how original you want to get, but all of the bolts holding the plate to the final drive, the final drive to the cast extension, the rim to the wheel center, etc. are more modern grade 2, 5, and 8 fasteners. If you look elsewhere on your tractor you will probably be able to find more modern fasteners where dot-heads would have been used originally.

Also, despite it looking original, I would recommend getting one of the newer vented gas caps. You can get one shipped to you for FREE by submitting some info at http://www.ihgascap.com

I have a friend in TN. His motto is "if its Free its for Me". Just ordered my FREE gas cap... thanks Urbish
As for originality, I would like to get as close as possible, if not totally.
Dot Head bolts. Are they available?

Not new, but guys save them when they part out a Cub. Ask in the Vine, but you'll need to know size, length, number, etc.

I have a 48 that that has a decal that reads:
1948 model cub
1948 model owner
Not all parts are original
on either one.

I just noticed, the right final has a cap over the seed gear. Is that normal?

Hah, I missed that. No, that should have a big nut and an open cap with a seal that rides on the nut. JP Tractor salvage has both.
