Postby 4dogs » Mon May 15, 2017 2:26 am

Still a newbie. This is a helpful post. What is the best way to power down the C2 mower deck? Thanks.

Never had any problem taking off in second with the 59 inch mower engaged...I push the throttle all the way forward ..Raising the mower as Barnyard suggested is a good idea to start and if it bogs down when cutting grass...I usually start the end of my driveway and then turn left with the mower running and just keep turning left kinda like Winston Cup but a little slower..If I stop to stretch my legs during the next couple hours, I just back up where its been mowed about a tractor length and take off as described again.....Dave

Stop the Cub and wait for the mower blades to stop turning, then take the PTO out of gear. Never disengage the PTO while under load, if you do, you will soon be needing to replace the PTO clutch, at the very least.

To disengage.
I stop moving. Reduce throttle .Shift to neutral. Set brakes if on uneven ground or going to shut down for a break . Wait for transmission shaft to stop rotating , then depress clutch . Ease p.t.o. lever forward.
Note disengage brakes ( from being seated at operator station) before moving tractor again. ( Less smoke that way....I know.)

To engage p.t.o. , with tractor securely stopped from movement and running in neutral with clutch also depressed ,ease p.t.o. clutch lever back.
When clutch is secured( hooked up tight) , check deck height in relation to resistance of what is being cut...check brakes are free then raise engine throttle speed to mowing muscle power and ease clutch out to start the blades.

I never engage the PTO at full throttle. I place the PTO in gear, shift into first or second, and let the clutch out slowly at low RPM's. As soon as the clutch is engaged, I then can run the throttle up. Best to do this when the mower is not under load, plus you need a reasonably healthy engine.

I have a c3 mower but i assume the issue is the same. I start with deck raised and throttle low. when clutch is fully engaged i drop the deck and throttle up. I'll bet most of us have to stop and change direction from time to time. I try to avoid this as much as possible. I want to delay the clutch replacement as long as I can.

Im confused where's the PTO clutch? I don't see a PTO clutch on the PTO shaft. Are you talking about the tractor clutch?
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

technically it's not a pto clutch. It's a coupler.

Hi,

BigBill, the PTO clutch is not a clutch like the engine has on the flywheel, it just engages the clutch shaft splines and the PTO shaft splines together. IH calls it the PTO clutch in the parts manual, here it is below, it is number 14 in the pic. :)

I don't remember seeing a actual PTO clutch on the PTO shaft. The fcub has none. It's direct drive. The int154/185/184 series and cub cadet has PTO clutches.

Dog clutch, sliding coupling, inside transmission downstream of the main drive clutch. Live pto on a cub would have been nice...
