Shut off leaking
Over the past couple days my shutoff has started leaking from the threads where the knob in. Can you recommend a product to use to seal it up?

Re: Shut off leaking
Hi,
If you mean it's leaking from the stem at the handle, the nut there probably has packing inside it. Tighten the nut slightly with an open end wrench, until the leaking stops. Don't tighten it too much, or the handle will be hard to turn. Try that before taking it apart, unless you want to take it apart for cleaning.

Re: Shut off leaking
i've already taken it apart yesterday when I found it leaking. It got better from working on it and I thought it was fixed but turns out its still got a small leak, not as bad as yesterday. tried snugging it down already and its not worked. Thought if I got something in t6he treads I could fix it.

Re: Shut off leaking
I have the same problem with a brand new #1 GI, Chinese sediment bowl(from a USA source)...I've tightened it twice till it stops, but if it starts again I'm putting an old IH rod type on it that I've refurbished...Pain in the the yaka hommie , refurbishing a tractor and having to take the moss wnnerful tank off to put another sediment bowl on due to manufacturing defects..Go Trump..

Re: Shut off leaking
Hi,
I think the guys on here have said that dental floss works ok for a packing there at the shut off valve. I have not tried it. Wind it around until there is the right amount to work.

Interesting... I used some Teflon tape but it didn't do the job. I will try some floss and see how it goes. Never would have thought of that.

Re: Shut off leaking
I've used the waxed dental floss for packing. Usually about 4 or 5 wraps around the stem then reinstall the nut and snug it up until it is firm. The nut will push the packing in around the stem.

As you have figured out Teflon tape and gas never work together. I figured that out as well a long time ago, live and learn!

Re: Shut off leaking
Lesson learned from my days working with liquid application pumps that used "rope" packing on the impeller shaft. The idea is to add a bit of packing a little at a time, then snug it up enough to stop the leak but allow the shaft to turn without much restriction from friction. Works best if the packing is wrapped around the shaft in the same direction as the nut tightens up.pickerandsinger wrote:.....That one I never heard of....good advice...I'll try it after I floss this morning....Just Joking.. .Thanks for the info.... Re: Shut off leaking
I was actually thinking of asking of it works better with the thread or against it. I have the floss packing in place and so far so good. I will monitor over the next week or so but feeling good about it. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Shut off leaking
Go to the hardware store and buy a little pack of graphite valve stem packing. It usually costs about $3.00. You may have to break down the strands to get it small enough to wrap around the stem about twice. Should fix it.

Is there a way to determine if the seat is good on these valves?
