Re: Cub Loses Power while cutting grass
I did the flow test and I don't have a supply problem. The tank is squeaky clean...not even a hint of rust in there. I also strongly suspect the carb, so have removed it and mailed it off this morning for rebuild. I doubt that's ever been done and even if it has I'm sure there's been enough wear and tear for it to be needed again. With that leak that just developed I think a rebuild is highly recommended.

For what it's worth, I mowed 10" tall thick dew-soaked grass this morning with my 59" deck in 2nd gear without issues. Keep at it. You will find success!

I've never tried 2nd gear while cutting grass...just figured there wasn't enough power to do that, but it sure would be quicker! With a rebuilt carb maybe this will happen!

Re: Cub Loses Power while cutting grass
Since so many of you offered helpful comments I thought I ought to let you know how this worked out. I decided to have the carb rebuilt by someone who knows how to do it properly (not me), so I shipped it off to Cecil. He worked his magic on it and sent it back looking like new. I put it back on and the Cub started right up and is running great. All of the issues mentioned in the original post are gone and it's now running like it should. So, as suspected, it was a fuel issue and the carb was the cause.

Re: Cub Loses Power while cutting grass
I have new grass in the back yard due to a new septic system last fall. I let it grow until it went out to seed (almost as high as the headlights). Granted it was new grass and wasn't as thick as well-established turf, but I had no issues bogging through it in first gear with my Cub & 59" deck. Sharp blades and a well tuned engine will let you do a lot with these old rigs.
