Need Info On Fertilizer Drive Gear
Hello. I am new here and glad to be here. me and my brother both have Farmall Cubs. He has a 1951 and i have a 1973 original Red. I got it from the original owners family. I need help with my brothers 1951. He just pickup a fertilizer unit for it with drive gear. we went to put it on and theres no where to mount the drive gear. i took the cover with 4 bolts off where the drive gear goes and theres just a big nut with a cotter key in it. Can someone tell me what to get and where to get it. Cant find anything anywhere about it. Thanks

Re: Need Info On Fertilizer Drive Gear
Hi,
Welcome to the website. There should be a seed plate drive, IH called it, on the right side, probably like your 1973 Cub has.
It sounds like someone has changed the final drives to the opposite sides, or put in the left side axle shaft and cap on the right side. Look and see if the drive is on the left side.
The left side originally has the cap, and the end of the axle shaft is covered.
There could be damage to the 5/8 inch implement attaching holes, might be why they changed sides with the final drives.
It would be easier to use the implement on the 1973 Cub, if it is still has the drive on the original side.
If you want to use it on the 1951 Cub, you will have to see if you have the drive on one final drive, and then change that final drive to the right side. The castings are the same, the upper shaft the brake is on is longer on the right side, you have to move that to the casting that will be on the right.
While they are off the tractor is a good time to replace the 4 oil seals, there is a seal on each side of the 2 brake drums. Also look at the brakes then, and replace them if they are worn out. It is some work to change the parts.
The lower shaft could be changed, but it has bearings that need pressing off, the Cub service manual says.
If neither side has a seed plate drive, then you could buy a used final drive that has one and put on the right side. Or just the lower axle shaft, and seal retainer with seal, and the special nut at the seal.
Here is a page from a Cub owner's manual showing how it should be.

Here is a picture of the right side axle shaft from TM's site. this ia what you should see on the end, a threaded hole the drive gear bolts to as it sets on the two flats.

You may want to take a look at the left side also. I have a cub where an owner had changed the final drives around.

Thanks. After looking a little more, it has been switched to the left side.

Re: Need Info On Fertilizer Drive Gear
As mentioned earlier, the finals may have been swapped because one or more implement bolt holes are boogered up. Check the holes before you decide to swap them back. The swap would also require swapping the differential shafts, since the right one is much longer.
