final drive bearing
I have a final drive rear wheel bearing out. You can move the wheel up and down 1 in .Can you change the bearing with out removing the complete final drive? I think it would be easer than taking off the whole drive. But I don't know Billy

Re: final drive bearing
Hi,
The Cub service manual says to remove the final drive from the Cub, it says press the lower shaft out, the bearings fit tight evidently. Then you can replace the brake, if needed, and the upper seals, there are 2 seals near the brake. It is good to replace the seals when you have a final drive off the Cub, if the seals are old. TM Tractor has the seals, and the seal at the wheel hub.
Here is a page from the manual showing the parts on the lower shaft, in the upper pic.
Below is the whole service manual, the final drive is in section 7.
Wedge the front axle before starting the work.

Re: final drive bearing
It can be done. Block tractor up well including wedging the front axle. Remove the wheel, seal retainer bolts and axle nut. For ease of removal take out the cotter pin and start the nut before you take off the wheel. A big brass drift and a club hammer and the axle will come out. As it moves be careful not to lose the spacer and the shims for bearing pre load. That being said, if the bearing is bad you should remove final and rebuild it on the bench for a proper job. Then it can be pressure washed out and reassembled with all new bearings races and seals. Good for another 50 years. Usually they are full of sludge and metal filings from the bad bearing. Good time to change the oil seal on the side of the transmission case to keep oil off your brakes.
