1961 Cub New addition
Brought home a 1961 Cub. Nice all original complete running tractor with good rubber and nice paint, 42" mowing deck. Used it for about 20 minutes and it did great. I did notice it smoking from the oil filler/dip stick. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Seemed to have good oil pressure and very quiet running.

Do a compression test. First impression is worn rings allowing some pressure into the crankcase thus the breathing from the oil filler. After you have used it for a while you may notice it using (burning) some oil. How's the spark plugs? Any evidence of oil on the plugs?

Re: 1961 Cub New addition
I would put some SeaFoam in the engine oil and gas tank. Run the tractor through the mowing season to see how it performed.
Stan's compression tests are a good suggestion. Will provide an indication of engine condition.
IF. If the compression was satisfactory, the engine burned a little oil and blew crankcase smoke, tractor performed satisfactorily, I would not be concerned.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 1961 Cub New addition
Thanks for the response. Now I have a 1960 Loboy and the 1961 Cub. It sure is a lot easier finding implements for the Cub. I should have started with Cub and then thought about the loBoy. It appears the Cub has more uses than the Loboy.

My opinion and experience.
A little 'blowby' is not unusual.
If the power is OK and not fowling the plugs ... check the (fresh) oil level and put it to work.

The breather tube could be plugged. Mine was and had similiar issues. I had to take it off, wash it in kerosene, run weed eater string through it, and blew it out with an air compressor, twice. Once it was cleaned out the smoke cleared right up.
