No washers, but the bolts except for 2 or 3 go into the water jacket, so use a good grade pipe dope (not tape) on the threads to prevent leaks.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hi,
If the gasket blew, while the head is off, you should check the bottom of it with a straight edge, and see if it is warped. It might need flattening at a engine shop.
You should run a tap in all the head bolt holes to clean out anything in them, so you can get an even torque.
Some of the guys here use Coppercoat spray on the gasket before putting the head on. Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket liquid works on the head bolt threads too. If you buy one, stir it up with a screwdriver before using it, it settles in the can sitting.
Here is the torque sequence pic from the Cub service manual. Tighten the bolts in steps, gradually, maybe you knew that already. :)

Hi,
Thanks Ricky. :)

Also, while the head is off, turn all the bolts into the threads all the way down as far as the threads go, to be sure they go in the holes and don't bind. New bolts can be not made right, anything is possible. :)
