Breaker points for 12V conversion from magneto

Postby DABOOTH49 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 9:08 pm

Hello, new to the forum. I have a 1950 Farmall Cub that I want to refurbish. It has a magneto and a 6V battery with negative ground. The wiring is shot, although I was able to start it recently (with difficulty). I can handle the rewiring, but I want to convert it to 12V. I know about the coil, the alternator, the battery, and replacing the kill button with a switch. What I don't know has to do with the points...do I use the same points that the magneto uses, and just rewire it to the new coil, or is there more to it than that? I've read lots of posts, but have not seen anything about that. Thanks. dabooth49

points and condenser are the same, but if the magneto is good there is no need to change anything. It provides it's own power, so it does not care if there is a 12 volt battery or a six volt battery. If it has an external coil added to it rather than the original one inside the top cover you will need to put a resister in the wire going to the switch from the coil, but if it has that it already has the 2 pole switch.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

There are three distinct possibilities here:

1. You have a fully functional magneto, which does not use battery power.
2. You have a magneto with a failed internal coil, so a previous owner has cobbled on a battery coil.
3. You have a battery ignition system and are mistakenly calling it a magneto.

In either case of the battery coil, you don't need to do anything to the points or condenser. Just put a true 12V coil on, or install a ballast resistor.

Thanks for the quick response. Here is why I want to convert: 1. I think my magneto coil may be on the way out, because the engine shuts down after about 20 minutes and won't start again until it is allowed to cool down. From some of the posts I've read, it sounds like it could be a magneto coil. 2. I think it will start easier with 12V 3. I want to be able to jump start it

The points will be the same whether you use the 6 volt system or convert to 12 volts.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Yes, a coil will do that, as will a condenser. Also a plugged vent in furl cap, or trash in fuel tank.

I had to think where is the "furl cap" then realized you meant to say "fuel cap".
