65 Sheet metal and lights

Postby bofahs » Tue Jan 31, 2017 6:13 pm

Cleaning up the '65 - thought I had more of this figured out, but... what purpose is served by the threaded spacers in the front, top holes of the radiator brackets? Also, other than going through the hood and the side panel, what supports the light brackets? Also, are these two questions redundant? Thanks.

the spacers hold the hood in the correct position, the head lights mount through the dog legs or side panels and the one large hole in the hood, you can see the light in the attached picture

Would anyone have a picture of the style of these side panels or dog legs. I'm working on a 68 that someone decided to break out the headlight holes in the hood and legs. I assume there was a nut welded on the back side of the dog legs? Thank you

Well, thanks, TST - It appeared that it was going to work out that way, and that's why I asked.
Since the spacer that remained on my tractor (I thought it was original - maybe not) was threaded, it looked like it might serve some other use.
I'll mount the lights this week, though it sounds shaky, I'm sure it won't be.

Hi,
Here are some pics from TM Tractor.

Stevetractor, the pics are not showing any nut on the panels.

bofahs, the pics show how to attach the hood, it uses 2 of the parts in the 2nd link below.
The 3rd link is for the screws that hold the front of the hood on. :)

No captive nuts welded to the hood. One on the inside, one on the outside.

Thanks to one and all! Much needed information, and greatly appreciated. Glen's pics were a big help. The hood is in paint right now - will get it back tomorrow and see if I can line up the spacer screws. Going to Spears Cubfest this month to find out all that I have screwed up!
The doglegs are sufficiently flimsy after all these years that I may put a bolster pad under the inner nut. Heresy? Maybe. Necessary? Probably!

Does anyone have pictures of any of the original decal placements and style of them on a 60's style cub. Maybe some more shots of tst's original looking tractor earlier in this post. Would make a great reference for users. Thanks

Hi,
Here is a pic from TM Tractor of the placement of the hood decal. They sell them there too.
The cover of the Cub owner's manual has a pic of a Cub, showing the decal. There is a 1967 owner's manual in the list. :)

Thanks for the reply Glen. That's a good start. Now there should be, I assume, decals for the oil filter, air breather, crankcase breather, touch control block, be careful short turns, pto warning, light switch, and a patents one. Are these the same as you would use on a 58-63 style Cub? When was the drain decal eliminated for the rad? What about the Cub trademark for the back of the hood? I assume that was dropped on square hoods? What about the hitch to drawbar one for the seat? I have also seen the big decal for the front of the battery box but would assume those were added mid to late 70's? Thought maybe someone would have some close up pics of a nice original 64-75 style Cub. Thanks again

Hi,
TM Tractor doesn't seem to have a decal package for 1965 or later Cubs that I saw there.
You didn't say what year Cub you have, I guess it is the 1968 Cub in your list.
You could look at the Cub owner's manual, and see what decals your year Cub had.
You could look through the TM Tractor decal pages. :)

Yes Glen, it's my 68. Yes I have been looking, and will purchase my decals from TM. Great folks and good quality. Will just have to use a bit of judgement I guess :tractor:
