Hole depth for rivet for serial number plate

Postby inairam » Mon Jan 23, 2017 12:26 pm

there are a number of topics on reattaching the serial number plate but I can not find info on hole depth

From other posts the oem rivets are 1/8™ dia x 1/4 long

The machine hand books call out a #30 drill ( 0.1285 dia) for the hole for an 1/8 blind rivet hole.

If the hole is .1285 the rivet has to deform to stay in place.

How deep is the hole for a 1/4 long rivet so when it is stuck it will deform and hold? It should be less than 1/4" correct?

What I did was to take a small punch and slightly flatten the middle of the rivet. The end still started in the hole, and the flattened area gripped the sides. That doesn't answer your question though.

This is the same question I have had. I still have a data plate to install, but knowing the rivet needed to deform to tighten in the hole, I had no idea how to accomplish this in a blind hole! I tried one rivet, and the hole was apparently too shallow...the rivet was still sticking out, requiring it to be drilled out. Let me know if you figure this out.

Bob, are you saying you deformed the cylindrical shape of the rivet with the punch to make it oblong? This may be a good solution...thanks.
