Hello all,
I have recently bought a 67 cub lo-boy and joined this forum. I have not posted anything yet since I have yet to have come up with a good answer for any question posted on here! I did not want my first post to be a question, but have not found any suitable answer though the search feature.
I removed the oil pan to clean out the accumulated sludge i knew would be there after changing the oil filter. Upon inspecting the bottom of the motor I wiggled one of the connecting rods and to my some what surprise it moved side to side. They all move side to side. Is this normal clearance or would this indicate bad rod bearings? In my past experience .002-.003 clearance can not be felt. I thought I had one bad bearing but since they all move I'm not so sure.
Thank you,
Steve

Re: rod bearings
Rod bearings will move side to side. How much is a question.
Suggest plastigaging the bearings, checking for clearance.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: rod bearings
I was afraid you were going to say that.
Thanks, I guess I'll give that a try

Hi,
Welcome to the website. Here is a page from GSS-1411, the Cub service manual showing the specs for connecting rods. Click on the pic makes it bigger.

Re: rod bearings
Glen,
Thanx for the reply, but I was referring to moving the rods from side to side and not front to back which is typically called side clearance.
I believe the rod bearing clearance should be .002-003.

Re: rod bearings
Hi,
Yes, that is what it says for the running clearance.

Re: rod bearings
They all are allowed to move. In fact, you can grab the crank by the front pulley and move it forward and aft a bit. No worries, it will find its own home.

Re: rod bearings
It sounds like you are referring to being able to move the connecting rod left to right, or up and down indicating worn rod bearings. in that case, the bearings are bad or incorrect for the engine.
It can't have much oil pressure under those conditions, and needs to come apart

Re: rod bearings
Agree with Art. Up / Down or Left and Right motion would need bearing attention. Forward and Aft motion may not be an issue.

Re: rod bearings
Yes, I was referring to left and right. I will remove caps and measure crank throws and I think plastigauge also just for my curiosity. I will order bearings of the correct size and update this post to my results. Supposedly the rod bearing are std. size but nothing else on this abused tractor has been what the previous owner stated, so we shall see.
Thank you for all the responses,
