unusual carberator problem
Was moving stuff around in the shed so I could get my 12 ft trailer inside to replace the axle and had trouble getting my cub with the snow blade and chains on it started. It would hit and kick the starter out, repeatedly. After several minutes of fiddling I finally choked ot several rounds and with the throttle wide open it finally started. When I got time a couple days later I started investigating the problem, and when I drained the carb expecting to find water, I got gasoline, but their were 7 or 8 small winged insects about 1/8 inch long in the gas that came out. They were black with a segmented body, but I did not get a magnifying glass to study them more closely. I checked the gas tank with a light and could not see anything there, then pulled the sediment bowl which had a little fine rust in the bottom, but nothing else. I can't figure out how they got into the carb bowl. For them to come through the breather they would have to pass through the oil bath and then through a jet. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: unusual carberator problem
That's exactly what happened to my 53 Cub when I went to start it this morning, and that thing always fires right up. Got mine going the same way, wide open throttle. I know I did flood it after a while, but it didn't happen right away. Also, I always shut the fuel off when I'm done using it and let the carb run dry.

Hole in or missing sediment bowl filter and filter missing at carburetor inlet.
Did you use a pony tank to fuel/run the engine in the recent past?
If the insects entered through the air cleaner they would have been sucked directly into the combustion chambers.
Truth is, I don't know.

Black bug carbaritis, although not very common it is 100% treatable.

Zenith carb., not warped
Didn't check the sediment bowl, but the one in carb is in good shape. Did use pony tank during the summer, but that was several months ago. Pony tank is stored with cap on and line plugged, but I did use it at another location a month or so before I used it on this tractor. Also the pony tank was filled with another person's gas from other location, so that is a possibility. Just took this long for one of the bugs to get sucked into a jet since this is tractor I normally use for grading roads and pushing snow. It only gets light use.Eugene wrote:Hole in or missing sediment bowl filter and filter missing at carburetor inlet.
