Re: Alternator oiling
For the generator I usually use my wife's sewing machine oil, if she's out... 3-in-1 oil.

No oil if you are actually talking about an alternator.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Alternator oiling
Hi,
Your info says you have a 1948 Cub, if it still has the original 6 volt system, it would have a generator with an oil cup at each end.
The owner's manual tells about oiling it. Here is a page from the 1949 owner's manual, the info is at number 8. If you can't find 20 weight oil, a light weight motor oil should work.
If it's been changed to an alternator, it is probably sealed, like Eugene said above.

Re: Alternator oiling
Used to use 20W but can't find it anymore. Someone told me they don't even make it! Personally I hate 3 in 1. The three on the old cans is what scared me the most; they used to say "cleans, lubricates, and polishes" on the can. Isn't polishing an abrasive action???????? LIKE A GRIT?
Lately I've been using 10W or Zoom Spout light mineral oil for light electric motors and circulating pumps in all the generators, motors and commutators I come across. No problems so far.

Re: Alternator oiling
for oiling the cub generator I like the Zoom Spout oilers sold by most heating/cooling parts suppliers and many hardware stores. The spout telescopes out to easily reach the generator through the holes in the hood, and it comes filled with turbine oil.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

The Zoom Spout oiler, or similar item, is available at auto parts stores.
The oiler is refillable with non-detergent oil. I use one to oil my fan.

The zoom spout oiler is pretty slick! I use it for lots of things. It's especially handy for servicing the blowers on my corn furnaces.
