6v cutout wiring

I'm getting ready to rewire and found this great diagram on an earlier thread.

Looking at my generator (which is in a box right now), I noticed that there is a wire from the F terminal on the cutout to the F terminal on the Generator. (which was placed by the guy who rebuilt the generator 15 years ago).

What's going on here?

Hi,
The diagram you have looks to agree with the Cub owner's manual pic for the wiring.
If you are wiring it the original way, it needs the 4 position switch that controls the charging rate.
It's possible it has been changed to a voltage regulator that is mounted on top of the generator, where the cutout, or relay, IH called it, would be. Other tractors used a voltage regulator on top of the gen, and they have been put on some Cubs. IH did not use them, the parts book shows.
You could figure out if it is a voltage regulator, or a cutout, just to be sure which it is.
I think the cutout has 1 coil of wire under the cover, and the voltage regulator has 2 coils. The original relay has 3 connections.
Hard to tell without being there.

That's what my dash looks like, I do have that 4 position switch.

I'll take a look tomorrow under the cover of the "cutout/regulator" to determine just what it is.

Just found a post by Jim Becker that sometimes the F terminal is used when there are no lights (which was the situation)

So would I keep the F terminal connection until the lights are connected?

John a cut out relay has 3 terminals and the regulator has 4 terminals. See photos of regulator viewtopic.php?f=1&t=94792. The wiring will depend on which you have and if it is a mag or battery/coil ignition system. The electrical systems on many were messed with. I have a 49 with a mag and a regulator and 48 with a coil and a relay. The schematics posted here are references but you have to be sure your cub is exactly the same as the posted schematics.

If you have the light switch in place and simply haven't got the lights on, go ahead and wire the generator "F" to the switch. You won't have to change anything when you wire the lights in. This assumes you have a cut-out, not a regulator.

Hey all,

This is what I have, except my cutout is black. (photo thanks to a post by Bill V in Md)

I have a Delco Remy generator with Delco Remy cut out (verified that there is one post inside the cut out) It's a 6 volt magneto system.

Due to all your help. I'm ready to rewire.

My 1947 "Uncle Bob" has similar wiring. It is a 6 volt, magneto ignition, generator cutout and 4 position switch, (which has the high and low charging rate). When I wired it during the restoration process, I replaced the wiring harness with a new one from Brillman.

I used the following guides:
Followed the accurate labels that were provided and attached to each end of Brillman's wires.
Used what was left of the old harness as a guide.
Followed a diagram sketch similar to the one posted.
Traced the wiring using the wiring diagrams in the back of the Owners Manual. This not only shows the correct routing of wires, but calls out the clips that support and secure the harness.

Took me and buddy about an hour. Connected battery and started it up with all lights and charging working! Still working after 10 years.

I have one wired the same way, but also has a lead going to the light switch. The low charge resister on the light switch was bad, and the F terminal of the cutout has s low charge resister, so I just made use of it. The F lead of generator to cutout is normal wiring for a combine or baler engine that has not light switch. Not all regulators have the 4th terminal, just ones designed for the Farmall tractors (L terminal), others only had 3 leads.

under "Bob Melville's Wiring Schematics" under Rudi's Manuals (MIRROR SITE) under Cub Info shows connecting the "F" terminals without lights.
