How does one post in a topic that's unread?

"Unread" means unread by you, not unread by anyone.

I don't think that's possible.....

It means there is an unread post since you posted.

The stars are awarded 1 per every 100 posts, replies or comments. There are 5 stars to hit 500, 501 was the first serial number of the Cub series. Dennis used to send out these neat pins when you hit 500 posts. I posted about the pins maybe 6 months ago.

I never saw one of those pins. Huh

You read it and posted to the topic. Then somebody else came along and posted to it. You now have a topic that you have posted to but it has new posts you have not read. Thus posted to but unread.

It means there are "new" posts in the thread that "you" have not read -- even if you started or posted in the thread.

Looking at the list, topic seems to change meaning slightly. It can be either the entire thread or a single "post" in a thread. I'll take a stab at a precise definition;

There has been a post (or posts) added to a topic, that you have previously posted in, since you last opened it.

(you don't have to actually read it, just open it for it to change, no one is checking to see if you actually read a post which is proven out by some of the responses to various topics )
