Restoration Project - Five digit Cub

Postby Chipmaker » Wed Oct 26, 2016 8:40 am

Here is our 1949 Cub I been working on for about 7 years off and on. A good friend of mine passed away and had this Cub and his wife ask me about buying it. I was getting ready to get married and didn't have the money to buy it so I told my dad about it and told him he could probably buy it and make some money on it. He bought it and I got to thinking about it and wanted it simply because it belonged to Walt. Super nice guy who worked on small engines in his garage and if he needed any machine work or welding he would call me. If he couldn't get your small engine running it was time to buy a new one, he was that good. Well after my dad bought it he was over at my house helping me replace my well house roof and I told him I wanted to try and buy the Cub from him, he said I tell you what, I'm just going to give it to you. Meant the world to me. I have already completely rebuilt the front end, transmission, finals, new front tires, new brakes, new clutch etc. Here are the photos I have so far. I have more I want to do to it though.

Traded a pistol to a friend of mine for a 1 point hitch. The knob for the adjuster was missing so made one here at work. It's aluminum and looks originalish. The center piece that slides was stuck, put it in a 20 ton press and had to use the hot wrench on it but it's free now.

I don't see the trunnion bushing in the primer picture, but it may be hiding by the spray can. http://www.tmtractor.com/new/gb/714fp.htm

My brother bought this plow and I had let him use the front wheel weights on his daughters Cadet when he restored it, I told him I would just give him the weights for this plow. He agreed and I brought it to work and took it apart and had it powdercoated. I will have to get some pictures of how it is now. All the wear parts look brand new on it. What model is it? It has Cub stamped in the arm on it.

I don't see it either Bob but I know it came with it, it may have been hiding with the helper spring and lift rod. I forgot about it and just took these pictures. We all know the early touch controls didn't have the arm welded on for the spring, I made one and welded it on when I rebuilt the touch control. I got dimensions and measurements off one of the Cub's the guy had I got the hicth from. Here's the helper spring & trunnion photos.

Your plow is a model 194.
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

How about this original IH muffler? I had to weld the pipe back on it when I got it and it's been holding good ever since. I put a fresh coat of paint on it as well. I know they make them aftermarket now and I'll run this one until it's un-repairable.

I bought this seeder a couple months ago for $20. Only thing I bought it for was the fast hitch but after finding out they were made for Cubs I am going to fix it and use it. The worse part is the thrower is rotten. The hopper is in pretty good shape and the lid is good too. Anybody know where I can find a new PTO drive for it or are they even available? It works but if I can replace it it'd be nice.

Been tinkering with this Cub here at work. Got a new steel gas line made, took fuel bowl off & cleaned it, new battery box on, new rear light & bracket (was missing), took the seat apart and cleaned it, primed it & greased it & converted to 12V. I wish I would have converted this tractor 5 years ago to 12V. It would crank on 6V if the battery was up. It charged but not like it once did. It has always cranked good if the 6V would turn it over. Now it cranks super fast like it has electronic fuel injection. Lights work on high & dim and now I need to put an axle seal on the left side. Got to make a new axle nut for it, the one on it has a couple ears missing off the castle part. I will take photos and post them.

Hi,
If that final drive is on the left side, looks like someone changed the whole casting from the right side, or put in some right side parts in the left one. :)

Someone did switch it out, if I had to guess I would say someone* found a casting on craigslist about 45 minutes from his* house and replaced a badly welded one and they both had the longer axle shaft in them. The same guy* may have bought a transmission from the same man and replaced a broken transmission (on bottom) while doing a complete rear end fix up :D
