Hi Everyone:
This may sound like a dumb question, but I need to verify on the removal of the rear axle for the left final drive assembly shown below.
I tried to press this out using the rig shown in the second photo but it did not budge.
Before using my hydraulic press, I would like to make sure that my pressure points, shown in the third photo, are correct since the housing is cast iron. In that last photo the two lower arrows pressure will be padded by two 2x4's. Is this reasonable?
The reason why I am asking this question was my concern that the housing would be subjected to bending forces. I have never taken apart a final drive before.
That's it and thank you in advance.
Conor

Re: Final Drive - Rear Axle Removal
I have pressed several axles out with a press, and without using wood. I used steel plates to make it level at the thick area of the casting, but where it is flat. Don't be surprised...it is VERY disconcerting when it starts apart with a loud bang!! I did use a 4x4 during one reassembly of the final to make it level. Not sure if others use some kind of softer blocking like wood...maybe I have just been lucky not damaging the casting!
That axle is rather heavy, so you should either have someone prepared to catch it, or put something close under there to catch it. Oh, and take photos of the order of things as you take them apart. Be very careful because now there is nothing holding the bull gear in place, and it is quite heavy, too!! There are spacers you need to keep track of.

I took a piece of aluminum and put it on the end of the shaft and beat mine out with a hammer on all 4 that I have done (both Cubs we have), they were tight but came out. Good luck!
