Mag man,
The replacement cover is about 3/32 too wide and 1/32 too deep. Biggest issue is that it does not have enough depth in the height department by about 1 to 2 /32, so it won't lay down on the gasket
The original was a IH part.
Will start new thread for valve/compression issue.

Re: Magneto fix-up
sounds like an aftermarket cap, Sometimes they fit a little funky but work, just dont tighten screws to tight or they can crack.

Re: Magneto fix-up
Yes it was an aftermarket part (The coil cover) (that had the IH symbol embossed unit )
StaninlowerAl, thanks for the suggestion of McDonald Carb. They sent me a coil cover that fit.
Any thoughts about where to get #251534R1 the little springy washers for the coil cover? auto parts store?
Also does anyone sell #251534RI, the felt in the distributor gear cover?

Re: Magneto fix-up
I always punched out 2 out of gasket material . helps seal and gives a bit of cushion . I bought the punches I used from harbor freight they go from tiny hole to bigger hole, LOL I bought the new felt once and could never get it to fit right. I really dont think you need it unless ripped.

Rebuilt Mags has a gasket kit for the J-4 magneto. The Web link is: www.rebuiltmags.com/parts_IHC.php

Re: Magneto fix-up
Thanks John.
I went with keeping the original felt.
The mag is now reassembled. New points, condenser, coil, coil cover, and gaskets. No engine to attach it to yet.
And Glenn, I will be getting a new seal. I gently took the old one out, and noticed someone had beat on it pretty hard to get it in (no gentle tapping was used!)
Thanks everyone for all the help!!
