Magneto Rotor Pinion To Rotor Play

Postby ctltmp » Mon Aug 29, 2016 6:54 pm

While I'm fixing things there is a lot of play between the pinion mag gear and rotor. The rotor is new and I was hoping it would take up some of the play but it didn't seem to make much difference.

Seems like that would have a lot to do with timing with all that play. How crucial is it? The price for that tiny little pinion is unbelievable. Almost fell over.

Drove the old timer around tonight with kerosene in the transmission and steering gear box to clean things out. No water in either when I drained those. Just some very smelly old gear oil. Still not really happy with the way it's running right now.

Thanks guys.

Make sure you clean out the ventilating hole on the steering gear fill plug while you're at it.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

The play on the rotor is not very critical, as the magneto fires as it passes the terminal on the run. If the teeth on that pinion gear are worn down to points they will soon wear out the rotor teeth.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

The pinion to rotor does not affect the timing of the spark, that is set by the points dwell, and the impulse setting to the engine (static timing). But it does create a larger gap for that spark to jump across to get to the terminal on the tower. So if all is in good order, maybe minimal effect; but if spark quality is marginal, this just adds more challenge. However, I would replace it in order to get all items in tune.

I agree with Rick, it will not affect timing but if there is substantial wear on the pinion gear, your new rotor will not last as it should. Yes, that little bugger is pricey!

Well I guess we can compare notes once we get things changed out and see what a BIG difference it makes. Haha

Probably good for an additional 2-3 h.p.!

I just ordered the button and pinion gear, got them from Brillman. I couldn't believe how much cheaper they are on the button than others.

This tractor was being ran off an external coil so I bought a new coil and put in this one, new points, caps and now getting the button. Haven't ran it but maybe 15 minutes before tearing it apart so I can't compare it yet.
