49 Farmall Cub
I have recently picked up a 49 Farmall Cub from my uncle. Have found a few items in need of repair, carb clean out and rotor/distributor look worn. In taking the rotor off the pinion I failed to pay close enough attention to the placement and did not get it back onto the pinion correctly. I had not seen this type of rotor before and was somewhat taken aback as the kit I purchased at a local farm store that showed to be pre - 56 models was not the correct part. Is there a way to match these up without re-timing the motor?

Hi, and welcome. You most likely have a J4 Magneto ignition system, which is different from the battery ignition system that your rotor kit from the store fits.
See this for a quick how-to on timing the magneto rotor/pinion gear on your mag distributor: viewtopic.php?f=140&t=83108
There's a good video on YouTube that details how to static time the mag. If you want to replace the points/condenser, the gap for the mag system is .13
The proper manual and a bunch of other useful info is available from the "PDF Manuals" section, look at the top of this page for a link.

Re: 49 Farmall Cub
The short answer on replacing the rotor, assuming you have not removed/moved the main body of the magneto:
The rotor has a rib opposite the metal tip. The pinion has one tooth with a clipped corner. The rib needs to align with the clipped tooth. Since the rotor is twice the size of the pinion, that can be 2 different ways. Put it back one way. If the tractor won't start, reinstall the rotor 1/2 turn from where it was.
