Please keep in mind that I know nothing about plowing and planting...so why are you planting diagonally across the field?

Ken - for the this particular field we plant diagonally to improve drainage and reduce erosion. If I plant North South or the long way for this field water will dam up in the rows and then wash over from one row to the next. The slight diagonal allows the water to flow downhill on a more gradual slope. Hope this makes sense and answers your question.

I plant on a slight slope as well, but I plant across so the water will "dam up" between the rows to hold the water in the field. This has really helped with the drought we are having here this year...I also side dress on the high side so any leaching will go in the direction of the roots instead of down between the rows.
