I have a 1955 Farmall cub. When I replaced the oil pan gasket it developed a huge oil leak from the two rear most bolts that hold the oil pan on. The threads in the block for these bolts must have gotten stripped out. My plan was to use a helicoil kit to repair so I can fix the oil leak. Is there anything else I should be aware of while it is apart? The clutch looks good. Is there a rear main seal that I sould replace as well?

Check clutch disc, PP, TOB, pilot bearing while it is apart. Your leak could actually be the rear main seal. You can replace it with an upgraded retainer and seal for about 50 bucks. Contact Tim, forum member posts as tst. Stan

Hi,
There are 3 bolts across the rear of the oil pan, one is in the middle. The bolts do not go into the block, they go into the rear seal retainer, which is made of soft metal, and is bolted on the rear of the engine.
Yes, there is a rear oil seal, the retainer is bolted on the rear of the engine, you have to remove the flywheel to get to it. Here is a page from the Cub parts book showing the retainer, it is number 4 in the pic.
I sent you a PM.

Replacing the seal with a factory one is generally a waste of time. Well worth it to get the upgraded seal retainer from tst.

Re: What to look for when putting front / back half together
Got the Cub cracked in half. Yep the rear main was new but flopping around. I put some silicone on it to hold it in place. I hope that will be ok. It is going back together now. Is there a quick and dirty household tool to use as the input tool to center the clutch plate?

To answer your question, a proper-sized wooden dowel to fit in the pilot bushing with enough tape wrapped around it to center the clutch plate. To address another issue, get ready to split the Cub again. The silicone will fail and the leak will return, probably sooner rather than later. A modified retainer with installed seal is the way to go.

When this thing goes back together, what is the best kind of hydraulic fluid to put back in the hydraulic unit? And how much do I use?

CaseIH Hy-Tran Ultra is the best hydraulic fluid to use. Capacity is per the Owner's Manual. If you don't have one, I would suggest getting one here...

Re: What to look for when putting front / back half together
Hi,
Here is a page from the Cub owner's manual showing how to fill and remove the air from the Touch Control. Be sure to do what it says in paragraph 4.
Hy-Tran is the modern name for the fluid at Case IH dealers. They only hold 3 1/2 pints, that's less than 2 quarts.
I didn't know you had already split the Cub when I sent the PM. I would recommend that you get a seal retainer from tst, Tim, he is a member on this website. I've never bought one from him, but the guys say his parts work good. The seal has to fit tight, metal to metal, in the holder.

Re: What to look for when putting front / back half together
Hytran is best, but there are no exotic wet clutches or anything sensitive inside the Cub's rather simple hydraulic system, so anything labled "Hytran compatible" or "meets MS 1209 specifications" will work just as well. You can get Hytran compatible fluids at Walmart, any auto parts store, Tractor Supply, Rural King, farm supply stores, or any farm machinery dealer.
