Cub Low Boy ammeter registers "backwards"

Postby mikes5785 » Mon Jul 11, 2016 11:49 pm

I am purchasing a Cub Lowboy (SN 1909) from my father and as the title mentions, the Ammeter when running registers as discharging or -. Neither he nor I have had to put a battery charger on it as it starts pretty reliably. This tells me something is probably wired incorrectly. According to what I have seen so far this unit should be positive ground.

Any guesses on if it is the ammeter wired incorrectly (reversed) or "changed" to negative ground

Is your tractor a Number Series LoBoy or an Offset Cub LoBoy? 6v or 12v system? Battery/distributor/alternator or generator? Is it original setup or been converted?

Number series, what's that??

To my knowledge the tractor is pretty much stock, 6 volt, generator, magneto (not real sure on this.)

I havent checked if the battery is in backwards

Serial # 1909.

The numbered series is the 154, 184, and 185. They were the later LoBoys that weren't offset and mainly designed for mowing with a few other implements available.

If I read and interpret the serial # correctly it's a 1955 lowboy. The numbered series all had much higher serial #s

That is where I would start. It will run either way. If you switch it, repolarize the generator. --Lee

all the # series cubs were 12 volt, make sure your 6 volt system has the positive side of the battery grounded 1st, follow the attached chart to find your issue

The fcub lowboy picture on this 154, 185, 184 section is still confusing people.

The fcub lowboy belongs in the fcub section people. Or it needs its own section.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

In my request for a wiring diagram for a 1974 International Cub 154 Lo Boy I should have also stated:
it is 12 volt with generator, with voltage regulator mounted on top of generator.
Any help with finding a wiring diagram would be greatly appreciated.
Original owner "cut and taped off a LOT of wires, I will rewire by hand if I can obtain a diagram THANKS. :lost: :help:

Do you mean a "starter/generator"? I replied to your other post on the 154 Forum also. Stan

If you're sure the charging system is working and you don't want to mess with it, you simply have to swap the wires on the back of the ammeter. Left to right, right to left.

I did a big reply on the Lo Boy forum, Thanks a million. You guys are a super great help. Yes should have stated starter generator, Original owner had removed all the wires. I just want to make sure I don't "fry the new voltage regulator. THANKS :hattip:
