Clutch throw-out ball bearings?

Postby JohnnyJohnsoninWI » Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:39 am

Hello,
Does any one have any long term experience with the ball bearing replacements for the clutch throw-out bearing? I installed on about 4 years ago and have been very happy with it. However, last weekend, I noticed a slight noise coming from the clutch area. Looking up through the hand-hole, I see the drive shaft is shiny where the throw-out bearing rides when the clutch is engaged. Not a good shiny either, it looks like some wear is going on in there.

When I first installed this throw-out bearing, I noticed that there was nothing to keep it properly aligned with and not touching the surrounding drive shaft. When the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal out) the throw-out bearing tips a bit so that it lays on the shaft.

Any suggestions? If I were to remove the play from the linkage so that the throw-out bearing just barely kissed the clutch fingers, it would keep the throw-out bearing aligned so it couldn't touch the shaft. I'm not sure if this is such a good idea either.

Thanks,
John

Johnny, unfortunately, the vast majority of postings I see related to the ball bearing style throw-out are not good. Problems such as you have noted and very short life spans with frequent failures has been pretty much the norm.

The graphite bearings on the other hand, however crude, seem to last a mere 40 - 50 + years.

I know what I'd do.......

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Well, Dang!

Thanks BigDog. I think I know what needs to be done, too.
