Which Farmall?

Postby frjeff » Tue Jun 28, 2016 8:07 am

New here and looking for my first "real" tractor.

Looking at a friends 1953 Super C Wide Front with a few implements. Fairly clean and straight metal, engine had new sleeves+ 2 years ago, hydraulics work, no leaks visible, still 6V, Fast Hitch. Can get for $1500. Was his father in laws since new. He has owned 12 years.

But, wondering if a Cub might be a more sensible buy. My uses are limited to small garden work, perhaps mowing and a bit of dirt/firewood moving occasionally.

Prices on these two models do not seem far apart, so looking for input on the two: parts availability, reliability, strengths and weaknesses.

$1500 for the Super C that you describe is an excellent price. However, I think it may be a little larger tractor than you need, considering your intended uses. Sounds like a Cub is a more logical choice for you. Having said that, parts availability and reliability are about the same for each. Look for a standard Cub with the implements that you need. You will end up paying less for a package deal than by buying the tractor and implements separately. Good luck.

The few implements with the Super C would be a big factor in my decision. Second factor is that the engine was apparently rebuilt 2 years ago. A standard Cub, in work ready condition, with one implement usually costs $1500- or more.

Depending on my kick the tire check, I would purchase the Super C. See if it fits my needs. If not, look around for a smaller tractor, then sell the Super C. They usually go for more than $1500- in central Missouri.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The C can actually be a descent garden tractor too. Judging by what you said the usage will be it seems that both would seem to fit your needs. It really depends on what you mean by "Small Garden"

If it were me, I would go with the SC, maybe even try to find a tricycle front end (It will literally outmaneuver a Cub all day with that). They have more power, are easier to work on, you said the engine was rebuilt (bonus!), and it has a fast-hitch. I'll also mention that a SC with a Fast-Hitch setup can be modified into a reliable 3-point and it even has a standard and centerline PTO.

Can you tell us what implements are with the SC? That would help too.

Unless your small garden is as small as mine (which I very seriously doubt), a Super C with those implements for that price is the way I'd go. As suggested, you can always try it out and sell it later (probably for more) and get a Cub or smaller tractor.

A SC will have a standard PTO rotation and 540 RPM speed, Cub won't. Besides, you might want to enlarge your garden once you have the equipment to accommodate. :) Go with the Super C.
